Welcome to IDDT- US, the American arm of the Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust.

A consumer lead charity based in the UK with branches in six other countries, set up to listen to people with diabetes and their family carers and to support their needs

Welcome to the IDDT US Homepage

The Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust (IDDT) is a registered charity and was formed in 1994 in the UK by people that live with diabetes for people that live with diabetes. Perhaps this is where we differ from other diabetes organisations – we know from experience the difficulties, the worries, the fears and the sense of achievement when things are going well. We are concerned with listening to the needs of people who live with diabetes, understanding those needs and doing our utmost to offer help and support. We not only want to help those who actually have diabetes but also their caregivers – the husbands, wives, partners and parents, indeed, all of us who ‘live with diabetes’. We recognise that when one person in a family has diabetes, all other family members are affected to a greater or lesser extent and they all have views and needs which may be different from the person with diabetes, but nevertheless are important.

The Trust was set up to look at some of the day to day difficulties of living with diabetes, the worries, fears and concerns that perhaps we don’t talk about at the hospital clinic– the ones that many of us experience and understand because we actually live with diabetes. We are especially concerned about the needs of people who are unable to use synthetic ‘human’ insulin because they suffer unacceptable adverse effects.

The systematic discontinuation of natural animal insulins in countries around the world means that some people are unable to obtain the insulin they need. We believe that we have maintained supplies of beef and pork insulins in the UK for as long as we have because we, the consumers, have fought a battle for the consumers’ right to have an informed choice of insulin species. Also because our insulin market is not entirely controlled and dictated by two major insulin producers - the UK is lucky enough to have a small British company that is dedicated to the production of beef and pork insulins. However, the global systematic withdrawal of animal insulins means that everyone that need animal insulins is in a vulnerable position and IDDT believes that consumers wherever they may live, must join together live to resist this and maintain their own health and wellbeing. This is the reason for the formation of IDDT-US and in the formation of IDDT groups in six other countries. In 1999 we formed an umbrella organisation, IDDT-International, to address the global threatened removal of availability of animal insulins for people who need them.

The Trust is run entirely by voluntary donations and we do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry in order to remain uninfluenced and independent.

Your news, views, concerns and questions are always welcome.

IDDT's contact in the US is Wendy Murphy

Wendy has been a Medical Technologist for over 30 years and so has experience and knowledge of the various lab tests used in the treatment and monitoring of diabetes. She is married to Paul who has had Type 1 diabetes for 43 years and so knows first hand about living with diabetes. As Wendy says, "We have experienced the highs and lows associated with diabetes and survived the 'human insulin experience." Paul uses animal insulin and imports it from Wockhardt [formerly CP Pharmaceuticals] in the UK.
